Description
Extremely rare crawling tractors from the 1920s.
The Animate Toy Co. was based in New York and founded in 1918. Not nearly so successful as Louis Marx, their toys are extremely hard to find.
One crawler is missing one track and would have included a trailer and other accessories. The second one is missing the bands that would have driven the rear wheels. Amazingly, the windup mechanism still works in both toys.
The remains of the box for one of the crawlers is included. The wonderfully humorous art work reflects the time with references to Charles Lindbergh’s trans-Atlantic flight.
Unlike Marx, the crank is at the rear of the toy. I have not seen any Marx crawlers from this period so I am assuming that this toy predates Marx crawlers.
Truly a slice of American toy history!
