Description

Tonka introduced their first military vehicle in 1963 with the Universal Jeep having come to an agreement with Willys to produce the Jeep in 1962. In Tonka’s mind, a toy that could be sold for less than $3 was a winner.

With the first military Jeep introduced in 1963, Tonka continued to make them in one form or another through the end of the decade.

The number imprinted on the hood is reputed to have been Tonka’s phone number at the time.

Tonka made two versions of the military Jeep…the Universal and the Commander with the canvas top (which is actually plastic). The “canvas top” on this toy is aftermarket.

The Jeep itself is in mint condition.
