Description
The founders of Tonka purchased the dies for two toys from Ed Streater in 1946…one of which was the N0.100 Steam Shovel which was introduced by Tonka at the New York Toy Fair in March, 1947.
The original colors of this toy were as you see in the photos. These colors were changed later in 1947. In fact, the No.100 went through a few color iterations before it was discontinued in 1950.
Also notice the wheels on this toy. They are similar to those used by Streater. Also…the Streater steam shovel had one decal, not two as later Tonka models show.
That this toy has the Streater wheels, the same colors and the single logo, leads me to believe that this is one of the first toys produced by Tonka.
Everything on this toy appears to be original. Condition is amazing!
The cab rotates 360 degrees and the shovel is manipulated by the cranks.
This toy is Tonka history and a must for any collector.
